The general objectives of the E-LIMM project are:
To address the shortage of highly skilled staff in the industry for microelectronics manufacturing by
development of skills. The focus is on industry-driven actions adjusted to the requirements of the daily
work in a factory. It covers the set-up and demonstration of new schemes, modules and courses for
education, learning and training for industrial staff from freshmen to mid-career staff to be retrained.
The target groups are operators, technicians, engineers and managers. Web-based learning and training
platforms will be applied.
The following subjects for the development of skills are covered:
For the application of new technologies with ever shorter lifecycles, the availability of the most recent
knowledge is mandatory. The intervals within which the acquired knowledge bases, therefore, have to
be updated, become shorter and shorter. Training and education in a time of rapid technological
change becomes a task which is more important than ever before. It is well known that the microelectronics
manufacturing techniques including process and equipment technologies as well as software
control systems are getting more and more sophisticated, and the learning expenditure for the personnel
is growing accordingly. Furthermore, the technological progress and the improvement of the information
exchange facilities lead to increased requirements with respect to further professional training.
Especially, in the microelectronic-specific requirements of factory operation and optimisation as
well as equipment, safety and health requirements professional training for qualification and requalification
of work-force is urgently required. Microelectronics manufacturing-specific skills and
knowledge are only partly covered in courses and education.
The E-LIMM project aims to improve and accelerate the development of microelectronics-specific
types of skills by set-up of new training and learning courses, material and schemes. Therefore, it
contributes to reduce these bottlenecks of fast and appropriate training and re-training to keep skills
up-to-date to take into consideration the change of skills during the employees’ career to acquire different
and new skills of the employees. The target group within the project covers operators, technicians,
managers, engineers from freshmen to mid-career staff.
Professional training requires the use of adequate training and knowledge management methodologies,
the conservation of the existing knowledge and also the extension of the knowledge base with respect
to new problem areas. Web-based training systems are ideal for this purpose. Therefore, the training
and learning material for microelectronics skills have to be prepared and integrated into a web-based
training platform. This platform has to be specified and filled with content following the educational
and industrial needs. Based on the requirements of the semiconductor industry, the requirements for a
widely platform-independent structure of the learning and training material have to be defined. Emphasis
has to be put also on the didactics and a suitable media mix realised in the comprehensive
workpackage integration.
